I’ll cartoon all the things we do.
I’ll place me by your side.
I’ll make some funny jokes for you.
Together we will hide
Until you ride away from me
And freedom says we’re through.
Though speckled green with jealousy
My happy skies stay blue.

The “I” in the poem is fictional. However, I kind of like to think this is how I would behave.
I love that the happy skies stay blue… we need to beat the jealousy with happy thought

It is the happiness that is key and the central message here. Thank you!

Good for you! I like the simple rhyming in this, like an upbeat simple song. And yes, apparently all expressionism doesn’t have to be dark and dreary. Good job!

I didn’t want any of the dark and dreary stuff. Thanks!

Upbeat, bouncy and a little quirky. Cartoon as verb is wonderful.

I like “quirky” and as I think about it, the poem is quirky. Thanks!

I loved the lightness & hope in your piece, but would have loved to see the “art” that may have inspired it. No sweat though, the poem stands on its own.

Thank you! I didn’t have a particular art work in mind when I wrote that except perhaps for graphic novels or cartoons.

Thank you. The “I” in the poem is fictional. I am only imagining what I would like to think I would do in such a situation.

Thank you! I don’t know if it was expressionism or not, but I did try to put in a blue sky.

There’s a children’s book-frankness to this plain speech of the heart. How could it be otherwise?

I hadn’t thought of it like that when writing it, but I think you are right. Now that you mention it, I don’t think it could be otherwise either. Thank you for the comment!

It’s something you’d like to hum while you skip and dance along a cheerful path 🙂

Yes, it was meant to be a cheerful poem even in the face of loss. Thank you!

I think the levity is welcome by all of us…it is sweet and cartooning all you do together is a delightful idea.

Thanks, Kathy! I think levity helps us stand taller to help us face whatever comes our way.

I like the idea of “cartooning” all the things we do…..kind of a diary in curves and figures with words above their heads in those vocal bubbles cartoonists use 🙂

I was thinking of those sketchbook journals some artists make of their daily lives. Calling them cartoons adds a little levity. I wish I could do something like that or be motivated to pretend I can and try. Thank you!

Your work makes me happy, Frank. I notice you live in Illinois. I’m from Michigan City, Indiana originally and loved Chicago (even tho it’s a violent city.) When you said “ride away from me” I immediately thought “bike.” I feel you would be this way.

I’ve been to Indiana Dunes which is probably close to Michigan City and I used to live in a rural area in northern Indiana south of Crown Point, but now I am on the outskirts of Chicago. I am glad the poem made you feel happy. Thanks for the comment!

Thank you! I see the word “blue” as both happy and sad. Eventually the green fades away.
