My monsters have me cornered.
There’s nothing I can do,
But they’re so jumbly juicy
My teeth would gnaw them, too.
I’d like one buttered up to bite
While thinking thoughts real deep
So people think the stuff I write
Need not put them to sleep.
Oh, sure, I do get sleepy,
But they are getting near.
Monsters, monsters everywhere!
I’m cornered. They are here.

Thank you, Magaly! I figure it is better, no matter how bad they taste, that I eat the monsters rather than the monsters eat me.

A bit 0f Dr. Seuss in this, like Frank through the looking glass–whimsical, with tiny teeth to remind us that monster do reside with us, all kinds, day & night.

They are all “my” monsters. I have to assume some responsibility for them.

Love the rhythm and playfulness of this! Monsters monsters everywhere — but not foreboding and dark. YAY! 🙂

My river poem was a bit too dark. To get some balance, I needed to go to the other extreme. Thanks!

Love a playful piece.. and why not monsters… This could be from the world of Roald Dahl I think

If I could draw, I’d have some of those monsters doing yoga. I don’t think that has been done yet, although my monster research is not up-to-date. I liked the books by Roald Dahl I remember getting for my children.

Are you often troubled by monsters, Frank? I imagine you just thumb your nose at them and threaten them with the toaster 🙂

Or the grill. Monsters can be fun if one is not worried about them.

Well, that’s a cheery way to think about monsters – I might recite that to myself when I next feel them approaching!

In my imagination, they taste like chicken. I hope I’d be as tasty to them if the tables get turned. Thanks, Gina!

Your imagery and words are beautifully well spoken in you audio.
Your voice reminds me of a hero from Canada. His name is Arthur Kroker. He’s got the exact same voice as you when he recites and speaks. Beautiful. 🙂

I am glad you liked the audio. I’ll have to look up Arthur Kroker. My accent is sort of an Indiana rural accent. At least that is where I grew up. Thank you!

You very welcome frank. Seriously though, I must have listen to this audio with your voice in it like 5 times now. Great voice you have and wonderful poetry you produce.
Hope you get a chance and stop by my page and read some of my poems. 🙂

I usually read all the poems people post on these prompts. Sometimes I don’t understand them, but sometimes rereading what I wrote, I don’t understand them either. That is what might happen to this monster poem. I can see myself scratching my head a year from now wondering whatever got into my mind to write it. I’m glad you liked the audio.

Maybe, it’s the headspace, that I’m in, Frank, but would love to change, some of my monsters, into toasted slices of pumpernickel, and chew them up.

The real monsters are harder to chew, but between two slices of pumpernickel they might be tasty. Thank you!

You make monsters appealing, all “jumbly juicy” and “buttered up to bite”! I was cornered in my dreams last night (after too many negative news stories).

Love the whimsical approach this poem takes and how that contrasts to the monsters and the subject matter. It’s a choice that really pays off in the reading of the poem 🙂

If one can take a subject matter humorously, it is sometimes easier to deal with. Thank you, Jade!

Jumbly, juicy – delicious word play! Buttering up a few morsels of monsters brings to mind the Shaw quote about skeletons. We must put them to work one way or t’other 🙂 Jilly

I don’t think “jumbly juicy” even makes sense, but I liked the sound of it and I hoped monsters that could be described like that would be tasty. Thank you!

Thanks! Yes, I remember your post about Tram’s Kitchen. I’ve walked miles around Pittsburgh, but nearer the universities. That made me interested where that kitchen was. On one walk, I did get close to where Tram’s was.

Bad dreams and monsters can never be far apart. There must be concerted efforts to fight them off in the dreams. That will trigger off the good dreams perhaps!

Curious about your audio embed on SoundCloud. Did you use a YouTube video or are the instructions on their site easy enough to follow?
LikeLiked by 1 person
I didn’t use either, but I suppose there are YouTube videos that would be helpful. I was originally interested in making audio books. The poems are a faster project.
I bought an Audio-Technica microphone (ATR2100) which has USB connection to a computer. I also purchased a “pop shield”. Total cost was about $100. I downloaded the free Audacity software. This generates an ogg file which does not require mp3 licensing. SoundCloud accepts that format. This improves the sound quality better than what it would be by just speaking into the computer’s microphone. After the track is made in Audacity I use the “Normalize” effect using the defaults. This improves the sound. If the playback is what I like then I post it to SoundCloud. I currently use the free SoundCloud account since I don’t have many tracks at the moment. That is pretty much all there is to it.
