The Fool Card

Pamela Colman Smith's illustration of the Fool Card for the Rider-Waite-Coleman tarot deck

I trust when the monsters appear
They’ll be friendly and want to calm fear
And I trust that I, too,
On this trail I move through
Will not frighten the ones who come near.

Linked to Saturday’s Image Write #9 hosted by Bekkie Sanchez. The image is a picture of the Fool Card in the Tarot. The original artist of the Rider-Waite-Smith deck first published in 1910 was Pamela Colman Smith.

Linked also to imaginary garden with real toads who have the fool card as part of their prompt to start a month of writing one poem a day hosted by Brendan MacOdrum.

  1. A wonderful fool’s errand! Monsters who calm fears…. Irony, as a great friend of mine says often, trumps all. (And she’s not being political when she says it!)

Great poem to ruminate over through the day!

  2. What a lovely limerick! It makes me feel happy (and you’ve raised the form to new heights). A great start to the journey.

  3. I liked how the poem made me think outside the box to see monsters in a new light.

In a way, it reminded me of Joseph Campbell’s observation that “the gods you deny become demons.” The monsters you do not befriend become fearsome? Seems to be something to that.

  4. You be friendly, I’ll be friendly. Let’s not be us scaring folk away.
    Nice, circular. Thank you.

  5. Awesome job, Frank! I adored your Limerick! I just hope I can do as well. I had no idea the Toads had the same prompt until Sunday (today.) I went biking yesterday (a perfect day) I went 30 miles and want to bike again today so I best get going.

    1. Thanks, Bekkie! I found out that the Toads prompt was the same just after posting and so updated it with a link. I guess April Fools and the Fool Card are a natural fit. Thanks for the prompt!

  6. I love what the speaker tells us about the subject, about himself, and about the nature of monsters–each of us can be someone else’s boogeyman, under the right (or wrong) circumstances. One can only hope for the best when the time comes.
