Ogres Are Awful

Flower on Cement

In the green of our valley where ogres do dwell
We think thoughts of heaven. They act like it’s hell.
If they knew all the damage they did, would they stop?
Or try one more time to go over the top?
We’ve been very rational, patient and kind,
But the ogres are beastly and out of their minds.
Our blossoms they pick and then drop to the ground.
We suffer indecency and without sound.
I could go on but my heart would seek blame.
When they cry I’m reminded we all cry the same.

Linked to dVerse Poetics hosted by Kim of writinginnorthnorfolk.com with the prompt to write a poem to save someone’s life. I picked the theme “don’t let the bastards get you down”.

    1. I am glad you liked the rhyme. If the rhyme doesn’t work it is often the meter or the message of the poem that is making the rhyme stand out more than it should and seem wrong. Thank you!

    1. I am glad you liked those flowers. I was surprised when passing by to find one on the sidewalk. They look better when they are not picked.

    1. It is like beauty and the beast. I hadn’t thought of that before. There is at least a temporary tragedy in all of this. Thank you, Sumana!

    1. There are ogres everywhere. We probably don’t all cry for the same reasons, but as I see it we all cry even if secretly and that gives us the opportunity to open doors of empathy which allow other differences to be ignored. I am glad you found the rhymes effortless. Thanks, Sarah!

  1. I remember the Latin (sorta) of this…don’t let the bastards get you down….Illegitimi non carbonendum est. Sorta of. LOL~! Didn’t study Latin in HS, but picked up that phrase. Love the rhythm and cadence of this poem, Frank. Made me smile, smile, smile. The last line is a killer.
