After Michael saw the ghost he understood. What he understood he would not say. True knowledge should not be made so literal that any monkey could understand it.
Anne sympathized with him but she thought his deranged prefrontal whatchamacallit generated the ghost. Otherwise why was he locked up with her?
Michael told her she could escape with him through the skylight of the cell. Anne said she would consider it. That was the only reason Michael told the ghost to wait.

It is now also Story 100 in Christopher Fielden’s 81 Words, a project attempting to “set a Guinness World Record for the most contributing authors published in an anthology”. They have 102 stories so far and need 898 more as of 8:38 AM CST today.
Photo: Sue Vincent provided the photo for the prompt.
This is very unique, Frank. I would never have thought of something like this in response the Sue’s photograph.

I’m glad you found it unique, Robbie! I thought the photo was a picture of some sort of skylight, but I might have got it wrong. The story would have been longer, but last night I found out about the 81 Words challenge and so I had to shorten it. After doing so it left the story almost as see through as a ghost and hopefully better.

Loved the folder and the interpretation of it. Reminded of of something Stephen King would write.

I am glad it reminded you of Stephen King! There is a bit of paranormal mystery here although I was mainly aiming for humor.

Playing with our minds, are we, Frank.
Carry on. I had a good time.

Thank you! With only 81 words most of the story has to be by way of suggestion.

You are always brilliantly creative, leaning hard to the side of “unique”.

Thank you! I am glad you enjoyed this. Without the 81 Words constraint this would have been a different story.

Hi Frank. The photo also made me think of a prison. Good story.

I thought there was also some sort of skylight above, but I think that is the reflection of the light on the solid ceiling. Those bars made me think it was a prison as well. Thank you, Kim!

Nice. This raises so many questions and I’m not sure who’s sane. 🙂

Me, neither. I kind of hope Michael escapes with Anne–and the ghost, but I know that’s a long shot. Thank you!

I tried to make its character a bit unexpected. Thank you!

A unique response to the prompt. A prisoner in more ways than one behind/below bars and in their own minds.

Yes, they are even trapped in their own minds–although I do hope the ghost can help them escape in some way even if just by bringing them together. Thank you!

This story is about magical thinking. I saw an old comedy (2008) a week ago called “Ghost Town”. It was a very nice ghost story. Thanks, Fred!

I’ve only had one experience with a ghost, but it was many years ago, a one-time occurrence and pleasant. At the moment I don’t see any. Thanks for stopping by!
