Whatever comes to cool the air
And make the greenless leaves descend
And make the clouds seem strange up there
I welcome as a smiling friend
Who tucks the prairie in to sleep
And offers dreams for it to keep.
Linked to dVerse Poetics. Kim of Writing in North Norfolk host with the request to write about “one autumnal item”. My item is a photo, “Tree and Grass”, I took last autumn that represents for me the prairie in autumn.

Very vivid, Frank. I would love to see an autumn prairie. I feel I know it because of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s books.

I used to see one better on our farm in Indiana, but now I live in an urban environment. That scene was from a forest preserve/park area which had an open area and oak groves. I haven’t read Wilder’s books, but from what I’ve heard she would describe an environment similar to that park. Thanks, Robbie!

This sounds so gentle… going slowly to sleep, and then the winter comes.

Thank you, Kim! The prairie is used to this seasonal change and would likely be disrupted if it did not happen.

A beautiful write Frank, I love the idea of Autumn as ‘a smiling friend who tucks the prairie in to sleep’ ☺🍁🍂

I think that is what happens although metaphorically. The vegetation are expecting winter and autumn prepares them for it. Thank you, Xenia!

It is cooler than summer, what the plants need to prepare for winter and spring. Thank you!

Thank you, Linda! I remember trying to come up with an adjective for leaves to keep the meter regular and the “greenless”, if a word, came to mind.

the prairie is so vast, your capture of the subtle change of season is very tender. with dreams incorporated into a poem that speaks to me of homecoming and traditions. those leaves had to fall from the branches. for with a heavy burden they couldn’t weather the winter snow.

They had to fall. If that routine changed I wonder if it would be even more traumatic for them than to have winter. Thank you, Gina!

This reads so smoothly. I love the sounds, it is graceful like a leaf falling ever so slowly to the ground.

Enchanting, Frank. The Fall, like Spring, always brings out the best in poets. Eternal cycles and all that.
