Cobblestone Fear

Maple Lit by Streetlight

Fear is round like cobblestones
Hampering my feet.
It looks as dead as dried-white bones.
It needs no more to eat.

I feed it nonetheless and so
It grows to my chagrin.
When it bursts that’s when I know
My breath flows free again.

Text: Linked to dVerse Quadrille Monday. De Jackson (WhimsyGizmo) is hosting and the word is “cobble”. I am also linking this to Jilly’s “Day 4 of 28 Days of Unreason” featuring poetry by Jim Harrison.

  1. Bravo, Frank! Glad you included this in the 28 Days of Unreason – it is perfect for today’s line. Funny how we feed that thing, monster though it be, and how it eats at us. Love the resolution that brings freedom out of feardom. Oh, and nice form on this poem, too 🙂

  2. I can feel the fear, inhale and exhale with each breath a calmness sets and one can move forward at least that is my hope. I think fear could be round, at least it does seem to circle sometimes.

  3. A unique way of looking at fear: Fear is round like cobblestones
Hopefully we ignore, and not feed it or else we are stumped. Love the photos too Frank ~

  4. That’s an interesting simile, Frank, that works well: cobblestones do hamper feet. I like the second simile, with the dried-white bones needing no more to eat. But the strongest image is of fear swelling like a balloon and being able to breathe only when it has burst.

  5. I face so much fear in life. My daughter almost died right after she was born from a freak incident. I’ve quickly realized life is too short and way to fragile. Thankfully she survived. And I have my faith in Jesus to lean on. But I struggle so much. I really liked your poem. It rings a bell with me. Thanks for sharing. I do have my daughter story a few posts down if you would like to read it.
