Silence

Chipmunk

Silence doesn’t make us lonely.
Accusations do.
May the times of silence only
Help those broken to renew.

  1. This is a refreshing take on the prompt Frank. So many of the responses are about how lonely silence is when you don’t have someone special. I live alone and really enjoy it. These days I relish the silence though of course it is nice to go out and chat with others. I do enjoy coming home to a silent house though.

    1. Other people are a good way to give us another perspective on reality. Sometimes we are the ones accusing ourselves and making ourselves miserable. Then others and their words may help us see things more clearly. I do enjoy silence as long as my inner chatter is positive. Thank you, Suzanne!

  2. This is so beautiful, Frank. Silence is such a tool to soothe and renew us when we’re hurt and judging! I find Spirit in the silence, in fact it was one of my spiritual intentions in a masters program. (Isn’t it neat that this program asked us to create spiritual intentions?) That photo is exquisite.

I’m honored to share this for #ForgivingFridays. Thank you for contributing. Your posts are renewing too!

  3. Frank, I like the poem, but I have my questions about it. Can’t silence be at times an accusation too? I suppose that’s quibbling though, because when it is an accusation then it’s no longer mere “silence”. At any rate you’re the master of short verse.

The poem immediately put me in mind of my second marriage. Fortunately, I’m well over the pain such memories once caused me. But — and you may be curious about this — one of the lessons I learned from that Titanic was that there is no loneliness deeper or more profound than sharing a bed with someone who does not accept who you are as a person.

    1. Silence is an opportunity for self-accusation. That can be very painful. Then we need to talk to someone, break the silence, regain our own worth by seeing it in the eyes of others. But if there is no accusation going on, silence can be very nourishing and peaceful like a calm ocean. You make a good point that loneliness can happen even when one is with someone else and physically not alone with or without silence.

      1. Would you agree with me then that the comfortable silence old friends and/or lovers sometimes achieve — the comfort with which they can sit together in silence for hours — is among the most cherish-worthy things about such relationships? I find it’s almost sacred.
