Faulty Intuition

Corn and Clouds

My intuition —
Got it wrong — but then,
“…I’m sorry…”.
I trust it once again.

Text: Linked to dVerse Meeting the Bar. Bjorn is hosting with the theme of punctuation in particular em-dashes and ellipses. I tried to use both above.

Photos: “Corn and Clouds”, above, and “Storm Clouds Over Cemetery”, below. Taken near Rensselaer, Indiana, prior to a meeting yesterday of the Prairie Writers Guild.

  1. Intuition… predilection… predisposition… many times I’ve been steered (and stirred) a-wrong. I like the form of your poem, Frank. And, as always, the photos.

  2. It works. The punctuation adds, rather than subtracts.

Sometime ago, my ideas about intuition were corrected by a friend. Of course, I was aware that some of our best ideas come to us intuitively. I knew Einstein had intuited his theories before working out the math to support them. But it took my friend to point out a further piece of the puzzle.

First, we can arrive at ideas by reason alone, but those ideas are usually either trivial, or fantastic. Intuition gets blamed for producing fantastic ideas, and maybe it does now and then, but so does reasoning out things — a fact so often over-looked. But it’s why you get perfectly rational people denying the US put men on the moon.

So I’ve come to believe the best we do is often to rely on intuition for our ideas, and reason combined with evidence to weed out the good from the bad.

    1. I agree that intuition is very powerful. We may only use our reasoning ability to try to justify our intuition. The intuition comes first and then we start rationalizing. 🙂

I’ve also heard that Einstein intuited his general or special relativity theory overnight, but he was thinking about it for many years. Intuition was needed to get the job done.
