Because a yellow road is there
We follow hoping it may lead
To lands beyond our present where
Our dreams may plant a fertile seed.
I would like to grow some brains.
The tin man wants a heart of gold.
The lion wants his fears restrained
And Dorothy would just go home.
Text: Linked to dVerse Poetics where Michelle Beauchamp offers us the challenge to pick a character from “The Wizard of Oz” and write from that character’s perspective. I picked the scarecrow.

Lovely picture and poem!

I hadn’t thought of you as a scarecrow Frank. I imagine you as a very dapper gent.
“Scarecrow: I haven’t got a brain… only straw.
Dorothy: How can you talk if you haven’t got a brain?
Scarecrow: I don’t know… But some people without brains do an awful lot of talking… don’t they?
Dorothy: Yes, I guess you’re right.”
And you know what? He was absolutely right!

That scarecrow had more brains that most people. Thank you, Peter!

We both picked the Scarecrow; loved Ray Bolger in the role. I, of course, as a bit more verbose with my tale. I do like your allure for brevity though.

I liked yours about the scarecrow on a cross. A different view than I previously imagined. I like keeping poems short. It is easier for me to write them and hopefully it takes less time for someone else to read them. Thank you, Glenn!

Somehow I knew you would choose a scarecrow, and that’s a beautiful response to a lovely prompt.

Sometimes the road leads us right back to ourselves. The scarecrow was wiser than he knew. Nice one, Frank.

Very well done, Frank. I like the last stanza also. If you add one more stanza and two concluding lines, you would have composed a Shakespearean Sonnet – abab, cdcd, efef, gg.

That’s true. I keep stopping some of these too short. Thank you, Miriam!

What you’re done is very good. When you feel like it, add another stanza and the closing. It would be wonderful!

I like the idea of dreams planting fertile seeds, Frank! But I have to admit, I’ve always been a bit scared of scarecrows. 🙂
