Hints of Spring

Winter

When I can’t get off my butt, there’s nothing like a kick to do the trick.

I’m beginning to value pain. To reinforce that value I think of it as the whispering of angels calling me to pay attention. Of course, I could just as well think of it as a kick in the butt, but this is supposed to be a poem, and there is more to reality than meets the eye.

This is also supposed to be about spring, but all I hear about is winter. So. More snow? Or is it time for winter to get off its butt and go?

      1. Yes, Frank, when there’s nothing I can do about the pain, feeling miserable and complaining won’t do any good, It only makes things worse. I appreciate the way you see pain and count the blessings when you get a break!

  1. I love any poem that uses the word butt twice. Also enjoyed your sarcasm, as you played with the words. Is your pain from arthritis like many of us?

  2. Frank you bring up a good point. For a society that is phobic about pain — take a pill! take a pill! — pain is, as you call it, “the whispering of angels… to pay attention.” I love the last line of your haiku, “we start again” which can refer to spring or to our footsteps after the pain.

  3. This is pointed and excellent Frank, especially the haiku! Pain is the great reminder that, yes, we are still here. And no, we are not indestructable… as we thought when we were younger!
