Spike

Oak Leaves

I practice breathing given air.
It doesn’t matter that I like
To spike what’s real with worries where
What’s unreal gets the loudest mike.
Sometimes practicing goes slow
Wondering if I’ll ever know
How to breathe. I’d rather not.
Mindlessly I breathe a lot.

  1. This is just splendid. I love:
“It doesn’t matter that I like
To spike what’s real with worries”
(as well as hate it, because that is just.so.ME. Unfortunately.)

Love the use of the word as such a strong verb here. Very nice!

  2. I know what it mean of breathing a lot, Frank! Most people do. I took voice lessons in my younger years. I learned how to breathe deep in the diaphragm that I could feel the rib cage expanded, then breathe out slowly. That’s how classical singers can sing in long phrases without breathing a lot. I still breathe like that. 🙂

      1. Oh, let me know how it goes, Frank. When I first started, my voice teacher taught me to lay flat on my back, touch on the sides of the rib cage to feel, then breathe. We breathe deeper in that position. Then try to breathe the same way when we are in an upright position.
