Despair defeats hope with fire.
Pete wondered what that was supposed to mean while reading the fortune to his wife. He felt enough despair for it to feel like the fires of hell.
“What does yours say?”
“It’s blank.”
“Remember when I got ‘A fool at forty is a fool indeed’?”
She remembered, but her blank fortune worried her.
“Maybe I should ask for another one?”
“Let’s switch.”
“Does that count?”
They switched. She read these words, “The fire of hope defeats despair”,. and gave it back.
“This one belongs to you.”
She asked for a new fortune cookie.
Linked to Carrot Ranch where the theme this week for the 99-word stories is “fire”.
I’d be worried too for a second about blank fortune. It’s as if anything were either possible or already ordained.

It’s almost creepy, those odd morphing and blank fortunes. Cool take on this prompt.

I sometimes get fortune cookies with no paper inside them. If there is a paper something is usually written on it. I see a blank fortune as one that is open ended. Thank you, Susan!

I was with a friend recently who had an empty fortune! We laughed and decided she could write her own. I like that his was about spreading hope and she felt hopeful enough to ask for another. From fire to fortunes!
