Words

Morning Meditation

Words would try to touch the heart of it.
They vaguely churn weak hopes that that will do.
Doing so is but a part of it.

Experts draw and make a chart of it,
Push away what clearly won’t go through.
Words would try to touch the heart of it.

The sound of words, a pleasing start of it,
May tease with pleasure seeking what is true.
Doing so is but a part of it.

Fancy words entail what's smart in it
And fool us with a wave of wisdom, too.
Words would try to touch the heart of it.

Guilt appears like broken art in it,
Displays a glimpse of past for us to rue.
Doing so is but a part of it.

So, come, forgiveness, fill your cart with it.
Keep the future open to what’s new.
Words would try to touch the heart of it,
But love protects the deepest part of it.

  1. Nice to see you take a bigger bite of poetics; being an advocate for brevity. You have wrestled this form into submission. How clever to investigate all the aspects of “it”. I like what you did with the changes on the refrain in the last line.

  2. It takes a love to forgive. I so love the theme of forgiveness Frank. This part really brings it home for me:

So, come, forgiveness, fill your cart with it.
Keep the future open to what’s new.

The it end words kept the cadence of the villanelle strong. Photos are amazing too !

  3. I love the flow of this villanelle, Frank, and the message is deep and lovely. I tried to write this earlier, but the Elton John video made me cry (just found out an old friend died several months ago). The upside is that I came back and read it again and its beauty touched me a second time! I really loved this stanza “The sound of words, a pleasing start of it,
May tease with pleasure seeking what is true.
Doing so is but a part of it.”

  4. Sweet. Little heavy on the “it” for me, though. And the “that that”, though allowed in English, first made me think “typo”.
We sung limitations of words and diagrams. Even if it is all we’ve got.

  5. I like how you crafted your words in this villanelle. Yes, fill the cart with forgiveness and start new. The last stanza really pulls the heart of “it” together.

  6. Frank, I am so touched by your writing. I really get the depth of forgiveness with what you’re sharing–and how words don’t capture the essence of love. Though they are a part of it. 🙂

I am honored (truly) to share this post for Forgiving Fridays this month. I’ll write it either this week or next week. Thank you for your contribution, and for the loving in your poetry.
    Blessings,
    Debbie
