As Philip watched the evening shine
With tiny stars to pierce the dark,
He felt a cooling calm and peace
Then dread turned on his mind to mark
With fear that all about his head
Were coffin lids to seal the dead.
Then Philip saw how dawn was cast,
How darkness bowed and night flew past.
Linked to dVerse Poetics. Sarah is hosting with the theme of presenting a story through the experiences of a character.
You have effectively captured how a mind can shift in an instant from peace to terror. I love “darkness bowed and night flew past.”

It can. And hopefully it can shift back again. Thank you, Jade!

That’s really unsettling, Frank. The rhythm and rhyme give it a slight nursery rhyme feel, but the content is anything but.

May the dawn ease any unsettling feelings. Thank you, Sarah!

I wonder so much why Philip decided to stay in the graveyard overnight…

He probably shouldn’t have. Thank you, Bjorn!

I am not sure what the story was here that I was trying to write. I hope the last two lines provided some resolution. Thank you, Linda!

I could hear strains of the Monster Mash, that graveyard smash, as I sat with Philip through the long night; don’t know where I picked up on the levity, but somehow I did.

I relate to this poem- as moments of peace for me are also sometimes interrupted by anxious or depressive thoughts. The darkness bowing to the dawn, however, is a good reminder that even our darkest thoughts will succumb to light and positivity.
Great piece, wonderful rhyming. I enjoyed reading it 🙂
