Beam – Six Sentence Story

Bricks and Leaves

The open beams joined the walls showing the ceiling and the loft where they slept. These beams pressed low enough that Ben could reach up and touch them in their cabin in the Maine woods.

This morning like those beams his spirit pressed in on him, but Ben had no time for moody temptations. Toward evening as he removed his boots and outer coverings he felt a breeze of consolation. He knew that consolation would come if he were faithful which he was.

Rushing to him he lifted his three-year old son and smiled watching his wife add decorations to their small Christmas tree.

  1. This is really lovely, Frank. I like the tender emotions you write in most of your stories. “Consolation” was very meaningful to me tonight–just what I needed, a reminder that the Lord has that in plenteous supply, ‘specially during a holiday season that is challenging for so many. It’s not that I’m lacking anything, nor do I ever feel lonely despite being alone…it’s the memories that sting like murder wasps in my head. So I’m asking God for some “pest control” consolation 🙂 Take care, be safe.

    1. I am reading The Imitation of Christ by Thomas a Kempis who contrasted consolation with adversities. They balance each other keeping us both thankful and humble.

      1. Oh wow, I need to read that one. I always appreciate you telling me what you’re reading, it’s helpful to add to my book list! “Thankful and humble”–YES! Have a blessed weekend, Frank.
