The black stands out because of blue
And yellow from the former green.
We did whatever we could do.
Some of it was never seen.

I read it thrice, and formulated several messages. I don’t know how you can pack so much into one quatrain.

Amazing that so much of the fall beauty is never seen, because it is out of sight! In the end all that is left when the leaves are gone is black trunks!

Great work on the various color… the black has a place among them, but if not paired correctly we wouldn’t notice.

“In the town where I was born
Lived a man who sailed to sea
And he told us of his life
In the land of submarines
So we sailed up to the sun
‘Til we found a sea of green
And we lived beneath the waves
In our yellow submarine
We all live in a yellow submarine
Yellow submarine, yellow submarine
We all live in a yellow submarine
Yellow submarine, yellow submarine
And our friends are all aboard
Many more of them live next door
And the band begins to play
We all live in a yellow submarine
Yellow submarine, yellow submarine
We all live in a yellow submarine

When you couple the title On Shades of Black with the illustration you’ve offered….one understands the palette of nature. The shifting and shading….the blacks blending into the umbers and the blues…the myriad shades of green…some of them more yellowed than others. I’m reminded of the artist who simply puts down several primary colors on his palette and then begins to blend.
