January, Upside Down

This January I hoped to see a tiny crescent Moon in the morning just before sunrise. I think such a Moon is upside down, but maybe it is right-side up as well. Regardless, the mornings this January when the opportunity arose were cloudy. The expected sliver of Moon did not appear.

While waiting to see if the clouds would clear I recalled an old couple. Toward the end of their lives they behaved like teenagers in love. They held each other close even in public. They smiled warmly at each other. They seemed upside down to some of us although we all wished we would have their right-side up love when we were their ages.

For many of us clouds get in the way modestly blocking reality. I’ve learned this January that all that is perhaps the way it is supposed to be. Clouds in morning sunlight also put on beautiful shows. Besides, it is easy to forgive all that cloudiness when I realize they also wanted a happy ending.

JUPITER. IT’S WINTER, BUT
OCEAN WAVES ARE WARM.

Sonnet

Contented pelicans stand on the shore.
Clouds look solid then they move away.
Water’s back and forth. It will not stay.
With all of this do I need something more?

What is it that I’m always looking for?
There’s the Sun and here’s a newborn day.
There’s a moment somewhere bright or gray
When every breath blows past a bolted door.

I’ll sing these songs of praise and some again
Repeating them like waves whose joy may reach
And soak the toes of walkers on the sand.
Then when my time is done and I head in
And when fresh water smooths this sandy beach
May love songs still enchant this fairy land.

Past Regrets and Future Song

My resolution for those tears now past
Are that the present day may rise and bring
Forgiveness. May regrets not yearn to last,
But let the fearful future learn to sing.

One-Liner Wednesday – Winter

Grayish blues and dark of night are how the Earth treats winter right while angel wings made in fresh snow warm winter’s toes to bring delight.

Magic of Ordinary Things

They're in the shadow of my day,
Although if I but look around
And see them in the light they’ve found -
We share that one light in some way.
It’s just a shift, a step or two,
That lets me turn to look at you.

Christmas Lights

Advent Darkness

This darkness isn’t such that I
Can brighten it by light I bring.
No laws of nature taint the sky.
No bonds bind it so it can’t sing.

The power failed, but should we wait
For what might not come speedily?
Some of us would hesitate,
But darkness helps our hearts to see.

We’re thankful for the light that’s near.
Praise sound, but not with our ears solely.
Our voices stir the darkness here
Repeating, “Holy, Holy, Holy.”

Winter’s Trees

Maple trees rest in the snow
Covered with their fallen leaves.
Winter’s wind will come and go,
But maple trees stand in the snow.
Their roots hold on. Let winter go
And have its way. Though some may grieve,
The maple trees wait in the snow
Covered calmly by their leaves.
