Cobblestone Fear

Fear is round like cobblestones
Hampering my feet.
It looks as dead as dried-white bones.
It needs no more to eat.

I feed it nonetheless and so
It grows to my chagrin.
When it bursts that’s when I know
My breath flows free again.

Kindness and Coffee

One kind word and coffee will
Open up my heart to you.
If you’re out of coffee, love,
That one kind word will do.

I wrote this while drinking a cup of double espresso with steamed milk at Java Punk Coffee in Colorado Springs.  It was the best espresso drink I’ve ever had.  The photos above and below were taken at the Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs.  I am linking this to dVerse Open Link Night.

Savage Gardens

Their last name made me think of something wild.
Their gardens with calm beauty eased my mind
Where innocence returned as to a child
And mystery was everywhere to find.

Silent Sound

While walking through a garden what I see, and what I miss, is filtered through words sounding through my mind. I don’t talk out-loud to myself.  I make sure these words stays quiet: silent words, silent sounds.  I don’t mind my mind doing this. I enjoy the company unless it’s noisy, offering a wintry mood to a spring day.

There are times when I look about and my mind goes silent on its own. I assume, like me, that it is also stunned, as if to say, but not saying anything, staying really silent this time, “Isn’t that beautiful!”

Like Day and Night

Although day does its best to delight
In the darkness my mind can escape
With the Sun giving rest to the night
Like a dream while the stars stay awake
When its setting is done
                                                                             Retains full mystery
And the night turns to fun
                                                                            And whatever may be
Then the Sun knows what’s done was done right.
Of the love that was done for its sake.

Text: Linked to dVerse Meeting the Bar where Paul is hosting featuring the form Contrapuntal Poetry.  Here the limerick about the day hopefully adds counterpoint to the italicized one about the night.

Dance

While algae’s greening in the swamp
And ogres in the forest romp,
The villagers would have a dance,
A masquerade, and take a chance
Some ogre with a fairy might
Pretend to waltz then start a fight.

They’ve never liked each other much
Although I’ve heard they sometimes touch.
I’ve even heard they sometimes kiss,
But I’d doubt all reports of this.
There’s rumors, too, they even love–
What can these fools be thinking of?

Our dance may tease some fears away
And help some find kind words to say.
It’s safer meeting through disguise
When gazing in each other’s eyes.
They won’t forget what each has done,
But from the present, who can run?

We’ll have that dance, no matter what.
True, worried folks must worry, but
Tonight we’ll take a chance on change.
Let something, somewhere rearrange,
Then, whether they like it or not,
They’ll get the love they’ve always got.

Text: Linked to dVerse Poetics. Mark Walters is hosting with the theme of funny stories arising from real life situations. I’ve been all of the people, and the fanciful ones as well, in this poem at one time or another taking a chance on change sometimes without realizing it.

Rain

Days drip gray upon my head.
My heart runs red like rain
That ever flows while living goes
Through pleasant breathing pain.
Would I knew why skies turned blue
And kept me safe from harm
I’d ever praise these rain-gray days
Extending youthful charm.
